Beachwood
lodge was built in 1926 by a couple
from Ohio by the name of Beach. The guests
were Beach's friends from Ohio who came
for fishing in July and August. The fishing
camp consisted of the main lodge and a
few small cabins. There was about 2500
feet of shoreline.
In
1944 Harry and Florence Morgan and son
Fred, 7 yrs old, from Norwood, Ontario
purchased Beachwood. The correspondence
from the Beach's to the Morgans included
all inventory, the number of kettles,
forks, knives, etc, and blankets, - there
were "18 blankets, 10 with patches
but still warm". All of Harry's family
thought he was crazy selling the farm
to buy a lodge, however, all went well.
Along came Richard, their second son and
together they ran Beachwood and shaped
it into a wonderful place for visitors.
Florence ran the kitchen which served
breakfast, lunch and dinner to all. She
prepared meals over a wood cook stove.
At that time sugar was rationed so extended
family members were asked to save their
portions so they could be used in the
dining room. Cotton fabric was bought
by the bolt to make sheets. The material
was cut just long enough to cover the
mattress, not long enough to tuck in.
The patrons were still mostly Americans
who came for the fishing. A few more cabins
were added along the shore. The lodge
operated from May to October. The Morgans
lived here in the summer and Norwood in
the winter.

In
1971, Fred and wife Karen, bought the
lodge from Harry and Florence. At this
time some lakefront lots were sold to
help pay for the elders' retirement. Karen
and Fred ran the lodge - now changed to
"Resort", along with their three
children, Steve, David, and Krista. In
the early years they moved from the lodge
in the summer, to a cottage in the winter.
In 1980 a permanent house was built on
the resort property. Fred was in charge
of building and maintenance, Karen was
in charge of cooking and cleaning. Over
time all the old cottages were torn down
and new ones built. Nine condos were added
along with the conference rooms. The lodge
has been renovated many times, the shape
still looking similar to the original
of 1926 on the outside.
Today,
David, Krista and Karen run the resort
while you will find Chef Dennis in the
kitchen. A heated outdoor pool has been
added, a playground and walking trails.
There are always lots of renovation jobs
going on.
In
2001 we celebrated our 75th Anniversary
of Beachwood. We dedicated a tree in honor
of all the people who have worked, lived
and played at Beachwood. We are proud
of what we have to offer and the people
who have made it so.
